The Battle of Titans – Mega-Bridges!

Posted on December 4, 2008 by Under Technology · 4 Comments

It is not rare that architectural companies design mega structures to win important contracts and when two companies fight to obtain the same contract that is when it becomes interesting. This is the case with two firms that want to redesign the looks of the harbor in Copenhagen by building enormous bridges over the water line. One of the firms wants to make two towers rise on each side of land and build a bridge-passage to connect them high up in the air. The other team came up with a project of a bridge that carries on with just one tower on a side. The pictures clearly depict their ideas. Which one would you go for? Here are some ideas to help you decide in this battle of Titans!

The initial most probable winner of the contract was Steve Holl, the designer of the two-tower bridge but his idea encountered heavy criticism and this lead to 3XN entering the competition. However, even though the idea was not welcome by everyone, it is in fact an ecological project that is worth considering. The two towers would be covered by a layer of solar screen photovoltaics and along with the turbines installed on top of the pedestrian bridge 65-meters tall, the building would offer enough green energy to run all the public spaces in the towers.

The other design, belonging to 3XN, is in fact similar to Holl’s project as there are still two towers, but one is small and the other one is incredibly tall and they are still linked by a pedestrian bridge. This idea is as crazy as the first one but the project is presented through big words such as “complex”, “diverse”, “flexible” and even “coherent”. People can hardly notice the first smaller tower as it is somewhat incorporated in the bridge and this is the reason why these two designs look so different. Nobody said anything about interest for green energy but considering we’re talking about Denmark I’m pretty sure the building will be all greenie.

The crazy Danish architects have managed to draw our attention upon their projects and the question still remains. Who will will be the ultimate winner in this Battle of Titans?
