PSP 3000 – A Necessary Upgrade?
Posted on October 24, 2008 by admin Under Others · 3 Comments

Sony PSP users have one more issue to think about. With the release of their latest upgrade PSP-3000 Sony has not implemented major updates but what we can definitely say that has changed is the screen. It’s wider, brighter and Sony has increased its contrast so that it does not resemble at all to the previous PSP 2000. The first consequence of this change is that the screen now uses more power than it used to. However this has no negative impact on the battery life as all the other components have been created to use less and therefore no change in this area. There also is the issue of visible scan lines on the screen which may bother you but in fact the problem is not that big. So if you’re thinking of upgrading here is some information you should take into account before making the jump with PSP-3000.
Once again, even though you “benefit” of scan lines whether you’re watching a movie or playing a game, and even though you have some minor display problems caused by interlacing issues it really is not all that bad. And I say this because the screen related improvements (contrast, brightness, and wider screen) balance the outcome of the image. However this might not be reason enough for you to change to PSP-3000 just yet; I’d even say that PSP users would in fact pick the PSP 2000 as to avoid the interlacing problems I was talking about.
Here are some reasons to support the view of not needing to upgrade, or even in favor of buying an older version of PSP. All versions accept the same playlist for games but nobody knows yet if this last upgrade is as hackable as the last version. As Sony has had some major previous piracy problems with both predecessors of PSP 3000 (just see release 5.0 – it was hacked as soon as two days later) we can very well imagine that they have taken measures to prevent piracy but the effects have not yet been noticed, as the new PSP has not yet been acquainted to the hacking community.
Strong points for PSP 3000 are as follow: a built-in microphone for chatting; the Home button has been re-labeled to Play Station button and last but not least important, this upgrade comes for a price of only $199 with Rachet and Clank: Size Matters and National Treasure 2: Book of secrets. So, if you take the screen as it is, PSP 3000 really is better that PSP 2000. You were given pluses and minuses, you just have to decide.
