According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal Dell is closer than ever before of launching a portable mobile Internet device. The speculations around it are many, but it is expected to offer the benefits of and resemble the interior design of Apple’s iPod. The product aiming to provide a great multimedia experience and a reliable internet connection, but no mobile phone capabilities, is said to be premiering on the market later this year
Despite the initial excitement, experts in the field do not predict a great future in terms of sales for Dell’s new gadget. Apple has already solidified its strong positions in the portable multimedia devices market, which will make the breakthrough harder. Even despite the use of the Google Android mobile operating system, Dell is not guaranteed success. The company’s past experience with producing and selling mobile pocket gadgets has been truly disappointing. Dell’s mobile phone designs did not even go into production because the wireless carriers found them to be “too dull”. Its DJ Ditty music players’ and Axim PDAs’market performance was poor and they scored low in consumer satisfaction. Moreover, the present market conditions are further complicated for Dell’s new multimedia pocket device by the launch of Microsoft’s Zune HD model. The rival’s browser, video and music playing features are expected to be better, faster and more powerful than ever.
The Dell gadget will stand a chance of making profitable sales if the manufacturer equips it with wireless carrier cellular data plan. Another option is to produce the device with a simcard slot just like they have done with their sleek Adamo notebooks. The company engineering decisions are crucial. They surely do not want to repeat Nokia’s failure to provide a decent mobile internet connection despite the Wi-Fi one, which ruined the market performance of their portable products.
The Wall Street Journal speculates that Dell’s new device market premiere might be postponed or cancelled all together. However, projects for the launching of the company’s smartphone are well on the run.
