Anything Is Possible with the Transparent Display

Posted on November 19, 2008 by Under Computers · 13 Comments

The clip below is meant to prove you that anything is possible nowadays, but still, what is the purpose of inventing stuff that cannot be used in the real world? This concept is not the first of its kind but as I didn’t get the point back then, I don’t get it today neither. Who would want to read a report, or play a computer game on a transparent laptop display panel? If it’s light outside and if the sun shines you will probably see nothing anyways so I don’t think it’s a very useful gadget. Unless you’re a soldier that has to keep an eye on what happens outside the screen I don’t see this device distributed on the market. Once again people, if you can do it, it does not necessarily mean it is a good idea to put it in practice. Think before acting! Via: gizmodo

Why are you so quick to dismantle any validity of this product just because you cannot come up with a creative way to use such a device? What about a learning/training tool for certain industries. Where information is displayed while looking through the screen at an object in real time. One such use could be medical training or mechanical diagnostics. How about thinking a little more before posting?

Exactly. Just because your mental capacity limits your imagination doesn’t mean this product will not have it’s uses.

Let me see, what are EVERYWHERE, you can see through them, but you cannot currently display information on them…

    WINDOWS.

Being able to display your navigational data on your windscreen while still being able to drive, not distracting you from the road or even needing to look down.

    Seriously, imagination FAIL.

i’m sorry, but this is.. impossible. i love seeing this and imagining the possibility, but it’s just smoke and mirrors.

in fact, you’ve seen this technology many times. the wallpaper of the laptop is green, and using camera tricks, it takes on the background image. look at :40 to :46.

Sorry guys, but this is fake. I’m not just saying this, I have my reasons:
    1) In the top photo, the frame of the laptop screen should be visible through the ‘transparent’ PSP case.
    2) What happenned to the PSP’s battery and eectronics!?
    3) The screen is backlit. Normal backlit screens rely on an opaque case to direct light out through the screen.
    4) If you say that the screen is not actually tansparent and that it’s a trick with a camera mounted on the back of the laptop, consider what would happen when he rotates the laptop. Also, the PSP.

This tech just doesn’t exist like this atm. However, if it did, then it would almost certainly have uses.

  5. Steve says:

PS: It’s a greenscreen, if anyone didn’t get that.

Are you people all completely clueless? In the top picture, someone took a picture of the area behind the computer and set the picture as the desktop background. Jeebus.

  7. george says:

you can make any laptop transparent by removing the backing behind the lcd screen.

You then cut away the plastic housing too.

all lcds are transparent unless the pixels are on.

  8. george says:

there used to be companys that specially made transparent backed laptops that had opaque semi clear cases so that sunlight would shine through and make them more visible outdoors.

  9. JamesS says:

Yes, It is very clear that it is a non-working, not real picture/video. This is called a concept. My original argument was for the author’s incapacity to think of a way to use such a device if it were real. This is what concepts are all about.

How about the video? It looks real.

  11. e3323 says:

    Its fake. Greenscreen’d

  12. George says:

The technology is great :) this laptop look’s really cool

  13. Israel says:

Well think of having multiple transparent screens on top of another, it would be true 3d.
